I would add that like all survival skills, the time to learn and practice the skill is before it is needed, so get planting and researching how to use and prepare these things now.

I agree wholeheartedly with your concern. My best advice is to get familiar with herbals and natural alternatives. There will be those who will say that these are much less predictable and potent than pharma drugs, and this is true. However, if the only other alternative is to curl up and die, I will be out there grabbing up the sticks and leaves. Honey, garlic, willow twigs (for aspirin), Yaupon holly (for caffeine), ecchinacea and St John’s wart are already in my garden and I am adding more as I research and develop a comfort level. I have thought about foxglove (for digitoxin), but haven’t gotten brave enough yet. I am a practicing physician, not a naturopath, and understand the limitations of this sort of medicine, but would rather have some tools than nothing.

Are my fellow preppers as worried as I am about the possible loss of pharmaceuticals?

In my extended family, there is high blood pressure, low blood pressure, RA, insomnia, bad cholesterol, diabetes, and on and on ad nausea! The biggest problem is they look at me as being “out there” when it comes to food storage and prepping.

I just know that when things go bad, everyone will be coming to be saved by me – I won’t turn away my family, but how on earth will I be able to provide medicine let alone food for all these people?
