Week 24 – Question of the Week: What prepping have you accomplished in 2011?

Week 24: 2011-12-29 (non-consecutive weeks)

Only 3 days left in 2011.

Are you as far along in prepping as you had hoped to be?

(no . . . )

What have you achieved this past year?

(wrote a book . . . )

What have you found a challenge?

(If I have to grow my own food my fingers will fall off . . . )

How long has it taken you to accomplish your goals?

(always longer than expected . . . )

What suggestions do you have for others?

(better to start earlier than later . . . )

What mistakes have you made that you’d advise others to avoid?

 (that could fill a book . . . )

Please post your comments in the block below. I’m looking forward to learning from you all.

Are you as far along in prepping as you had hoped to be?
Not quite, but we have been doing this for a few years now and we are way ahead of the game.

What have you achieved this past year?
Completed more medical training, got a couple goats, 25 more egg-layers, upgraded the solar (still not big enough yet, but at least I can run our fridge), oh and bought your book 🙂

What have you found a challenge?
It has taken me 3 years to get our soil to the point were it could sustain a garden, getting it to that point was a long road of failures. Don’t plan on doing it, start now, failure is ok while the stores are still open.

How long has it taken you to accomplish your goals?

    (always longer than expected . . . ) ditto

What suggestions do you have for others?

Don’t bite off more the you can chew, we did (land, live stock, etc.) it can and will be overwhelming. Take baby steps, a little here a little there. Regardless of your level of prep, if you have started, you are ahead of the game. If you have not started, 1st priority is water, you can work on everything else in the process but make sure you have the water situation nailed down.

What mistakes have you made that you’d advise others to avoid?

Not having the priorities in order, see above about water. My current plan is not sustainable for a long period of time. I will be focusing my attention on that in the next month.

Yes. But not as much as I know I need to be. 😉

What have you achieved this past year?
This past year, I took a medical class and really beefed up my medical preps. I also started seriously learning more about herbs.

What have you found a challenge?

I am not a gardener. Thankfully, some of my neighbors are, and there are many wild and delicious (as well as medicinal) plants growing in my locale.

How long has it taken you to accomplish your goals?
My goals are never “accomplished.” I suppose I have met some intermediate objectives along the way, but I still have a long way to go.

What suggestions do you have for others?
Do SOMETHING! Don’t wait until you have enough money or time. You will never have enough of either. Get started. Learn something new every day and buy something to add to your preps out of every paycheck.

What mistakes have you made that you’d advise others to avoid?

The shotgun approach to preparedness. Yes, you need everything. But prioritize. Get water purification, fire, shelter, food, basic defense and medical under control, then you can focus on hygiene, household supplies, “tactical” gear and whatever else you need.
